Artworks in Architecture

  • Lecturer
    • Simona Martinoli

The course addresses the issue of artworks integrated into architecture or related to it, conceived during the construction or renovation of public buildings. This means tackling a complex and controversial topic: artists’ creativity and the needs of architects, public expectations, and the urge to communicate certain messages by clients are just some of the issues involved in the often difficult relations between art and architecture. Ideally the two disciplines should meet on the same ground, each maintaining its independence of expression and enriching the other. To illustrate the topic, a selection of artistic projects will be presented, from 1900 until the present.
