Painters and Sculptors in Relation to Patronage
The course intends to tackle the major artistic and historical events of the Seventeenth Century through key figures of painters, sculptors and architects, who helped creating the so-called “Industry of the Baroque”. Particular importance will be attributed to dynamics relations with patronage, the basis of the profound change of artists’ social and cultural role, which takes place in this period, thanks to the art market and the exponential development of Seventeenth Century pictorial genres (landscape, still life, genre scene). Rome, Naples, Florence, Genoa, Venice, will be a privileged cases studies, heartland of instances that radiate in Europe through the artists: Caravaggio, Bernini, Fanzago, Parodi, Algardi, van Dyck and Rubens.
