Economic Models of Cities Facultative
Course | semester II | MA 1 | ects 2.5
Lecturer:
Antonio Calafati
The course will provide the categorial
bases for the study of cities interpreted as dynamic
socio-economic systems and the analysis of the “European model of the city”. After illustrating the
constituent variables of the (socio-economic) structure of cities, the relations between them and the
mechanisms that determine their changes over time, we will first examine the processes of production
and consumption that characterize urban systems and are identified with their processes (both static
and dynamic). The second part will focus on the European model of the city, distinguished by trajectories
of economic growth that respect the constraints of political participation, social cohesion, environmental
sustainability and urban quality. The European city will be studied from an economic perspective in
all its complexity and specificity, and compared critically with models in other regions of the world.
