Paper session:
Dynamic of networks and system of cities' evolution

Supported by SPANGEO group of the European Research Group S4 (Spatial Simulations for Social Science).

Cities are ever more deeply built up by global networks,
which develop, specialize and affect their evolution. These
networks encompass cities inside urban systems, where
qualities of localized urban societies interact directly or
indirectly with the others. Starting from a network
approach, the presentations should underline the effect of
inter-urban networks on cities' development, under several
trend hypotheses.

The session seeks to share new theories and methodologies in
network dynamics, in particular relating to urban systems
analyses. All approaches based on empirical studies,
simulations, as well as theoretical based reflections are
welcome.

The objectives of the session are threefold:
1- Investigate the combination of different kinds of
networks: transport, telecommunication, economic, political
or cultural;
2- Explore the relevance of network dynamics theories,
applied for more than 10 years in every scientific fields:
measure "scale free" effects and "small world"
developments in a comparative and critical way to face
methodological perspectives. In particular, the expected
papers could consider features as: the relevant role of
geographical levels (regions, continents, etc.) in the
cohesion of globalization networks; similarities between
different kind of networks; hierarchies and concentrations.
3- Evaluate the global networks effects on the future
structure of urban systems, and on city's development. A
theoretical approach, taking into account multi-level or
multi-dimension networks, can be developed between space of
places and space of flows, focusing on speed and level of
diffusion of knowledge or on other effects of globalization.

Joining the session
Interested participants should send an abstract of max 250
words to Daniele Ietri ([email protected]) no later than
26th October 2009. Contributors will have to register first
for the conference and then submit their abstract in the
regular way (through the AAG website:
http://www.aag.org/annualmeetings/2010/registration.htm).
Finally send the registration code (PIN) they receive to the
Session organizers. Please note that the PIN is activated
only after Authors have paid the conference fee AND have
submitted the abstract. We will then mention all
registration codes that will be in our session.
