Towards SUD. Solar and collective effort

Institutional Communication Service

25 April 2022

Sustainable University Day 2022 is fast approaching. It will be held on Friday, 29 April, in Mendrisio, on both USI and SUPSI campuses. In the run-up to the event, each week, we are presenting one of the four sessions in which the programme promoted by U Change is divided. Sustainable University Day (SUD) is a day in which students, professors, researchers and all those interested in the topic of sustainability will be able to discover various sustainability initiatives and projects and discuss together how universities can contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainability Goals.

Universities and the 2030 Agenda: what role do social challenges, dialogue with the territory and student commitment play? This will be the leitmotif of the ten workshops, divided into four sessions, that will lead the Sustainable University Day 2022. Here are the two workshops of the fourthe and last session, scheduled in parallel from 2.30 pm to 3.15 pm.

Solar: just a blunder or the energy of the future?
Cristina Gianella, Dr. Giovanni Pellegri (L’ideatorio, USI), Claudio Caccia (Swissolar)

Can photovoltaics ensure the energy transition and compensate for the abandonment of fossil fuels and nuclear power? What are the challenges ahead? What do you think about it? Come and discuss it with an expert.

Language: Italian.

Jointly engaged for more sustainability: discussion round with actors from the academic and student world
Yves Gärtner (Head of project, U Change, Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences)

The goal is clear, but the way to achieve it is not: higher education institutions should become more sustainable! In a moderated discussion with people from the academic and student world, and with the opportunity for everyone to participate, possible partnerships and appropriate fields of action will be explored. In the end, a call to action with concrete starting points should result from the discussion.

Language: French, German, Italian.

Global sustainable development issues have gained political importance in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) context. Consequently, the thematisation of these issues during studies has become even more important. For this reason, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, through the U Change initiative, is promoting Sustainable University Day (SUD) - a day in which students, researchers, lecturers, university staff and all interested parties will be able to engage in various activities as part of an interactive and multifaceted programme, in collaboration with research and teaching partners, non-profit organisations and local associations.

Ten workshops, a "project exchange" to discover different initiatives in sustainability and performance with the Master students of the Accademia Teatro Dimitri. Friday 29 April, from 9 am to 5 pm, in Mendrisio: in the morning on the SUPSI Campus, in the afternoon on the USI Campus.
