Dario Gamboni è professore ordinario di storia dell'arte e architettura contemporanea all'Università di Ginevra. Cattedre precedenti all'Université Lumière Lyon II, alla Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, all'Universiteit van Amsterdam; è stato professore invitato alle Università di Buenos Aires, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg in Brisgau, Mexico (UNAM), New Delhi (JNU), Sao Paulo, Strasbourg, Tokyo e Zurigo e all'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris.
Membro dell'Institut Universitaire de France (1993-1998), Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellow al Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), National Gallery of Art, Washington (1996); Premio Meret Oppenheim 2006 dell'Ufficio federale della cultura Svizzera; Paul Mellon Visiting Senior Fellow, CASVA (2009); Senior Research Fellow al Henry Moore Institute, Leeds (2010); Clark Fellow al Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass. (2010-2011). Professorial Fellow all'Istituto svizzero di studi d'arte (SIK-ISEA), Zurigo (2013-2014).
