Architecture in Global Socialism

lunedì 23 maggio 2022 ore 10:50

Palazzo Canavée, aula C0.61

Prof. Stanek will speak about his book Architecture in Global Socialism, which rewrites the history of global urbanization and its architecture during the Cold War through the lens of socialist internationalism. It describes how local authorities and professionals in Ghana, Nigeria and the Middle East drew on Soviet prefabrication systems, Hungarian and Polish planning methods, Yugoslav and Bulgarian construction materials, Romanian and East German standard designs, and manual laborers from across Eastern Europe. Stanek demonstrates how practices of global cooperation by socialist countries—what he calls socialist worldmaking—left their enduring mark on urban landscapes in the postcolonial world.

Łukasz Stanek is Professor of Architectural History at the University of Manchester, UK, and Senior Fellow, The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra, Ghana.
