The volume explores the work of Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981), Milanese architect, urbanist and designer, in relation to the various themes embodied in his works. Starting from his scientific and intellectual biography and creative beginnings, already notable for a propensity to absorb  procedures, figures, types of pictorial and graphic composition from other disciplines, particularly the arts, the volume reconstructs Minoletti's position in the post-war debate on urban planning and his commitment to the modernisation of railway stations in Milan; his talent for working in delicate contexts, especially the historic fabric of the city of Milan, where he displayed spatial sensitivity and mastery in calibrating respect for the past with the search for modern solutions (as in the Condominium of superimposed villas at the Giardini d’Arcadia); his skill as a creator of spaces of life and display and “architecture in movement” (including the interior of the famous ETR 300-Settebello electric train and BZ 308 aircraft). These themes are all given a visual compendium in over 900 black-and-white and colour illustrations.

Tomaso Adamini (1764-1827) and his sons Leone (1789-1854) and Domenico (1792-1860) were among the leading Ticinese architects and builders active in St. Petersburg, by the importance of their works and the duration of their activity, which extended from the last years of the reign of Catherine II until the mid-nineteenth century.

This book presents an annotated and illustrated catalogue of the holdings of their drawings in the Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio: a fund comprising the drawings made by family members together with autograph sheets attributable to their employees or notable architects of the time: Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700-1771), Giacomo Quarenghi (1744-1817), Jean-François Thomas de Thomon (1759-1813), Carlo Rossi (1775-1849), Giovanni Battista Scotti (1776/77-1830), Alexander Brjullov (1798-1877), André Stackenschneider (1802-1865).

The catalogue is preceded by an extensive essay by Nicola Navone that frames the work of the Adamini architects in the setting of Russia and St. Petersburg, and within the context of the migrations of craft workers characteristic of the Ticinese area.

The book contains many previously unpublished essays on the theory and history of twentieth-century art and architecture, written as a tribute to Bruno Reichlin, architect and professor at various universities, well known for having developed an innovative approach to the analysis of the work of architecture, based on the development of critical instruments derived from the criticism of the literary text and art, and for his battles to preserve the architectural heritage of the twentieth century. The collection is structured in five sections devoted to the theory of art and architecture; changes in construction processes resulting from the introduction of new materials, techniques and technologies; analysis of one or more architectural works; methodological issues and practices bound up with the restoration of modern buildings.

Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981) graduated in architecture in 1931, when he was just 21 years old, after experiences that included working as an illustrator and fashion designer during his university studies. At the Politecnico di Milano he completed a training with a traditionalist matrix, but at the same time observed with interest the work of Le Corbusier and Gropius, showing himself a firm supporter of modernity. His long professional career spanned two successful seasons, the thirties and the period of reconstruction, and was characterized by an unusual versatility of interests: he was represented at all the editions of the Milan Triennial 1930-1957, an assistant at the School of Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano 1930-1949 and active in the architectural debate in Milan. Minoletti’s work covered the whole scale, ranging from the design of the city to that of the object, with an ease that was the sign of a “wholly Italian versatility”, as Gio Ponti observed.

Giulio Minoletti’s professional archive, of which this volume presents the analytical inventory, is preserved in the Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio.

Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981), a Milanese architect, was notable for his remarkable versatility, his flair for experimental research into forms, materials, polychromes and hybrids between artistic genres that characterized his work as architect, builder and designer of housing estates, green areas, swimming pools and objects. This publication brings together the work of analysis of Minoletti’s works conducted by the students of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture during the spring semester of 2013, in collaboration with the Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio, which preserves Minoletti’s archives. The complexity and variety of his output is firstly placed in its Italian and international setting in a timeline that opens the publication, and then illustrated through a broad collection of projects. An initial essay, a brief biography and a portfolio of recent photographs complete the volume.

This slender volume contains five studies devoted to one of the most famous Italian architects, Marco Zanuso (1916-2001), a true pioneer of design in Milan in the second half of the last century. His achievement, interpreted principally in relation to clients and the industry that endorsed his forward-looking insights and favoured the creation of cutting-edge projects, is investigated in the essays all accompanied by a refined series of illustrations.

Texts by Alberto Bassi, Fiorella Bulegato, Maddalena Scimemi, Christian Sumi, Letizia Tedeschi.

This volume brings together for the first time a selection of the writings of the Milanese architect and designer Marco Zanuso (1916-2001). Chosen from articles, conference papers, lectures and public meetings, they include a number that are unpublished. The choice of texts seeks to represent the breadth of Zanuso’s interests, ranging from new techniques of mass production to the relations between art and architecture, the role of technology in design and management methods in the design process, and his contribution to the contemporary architectural debate.

The volume is accompanied by illustrations of Zanuso’s works and projects, from the architect’s rich photographic collection.

Foreword by Bruno Reichlin, introductory essay by Roberta Grignolo.

Villa La Saracena, designed and built between 1955 and 1957 on the Tyrrhenian coast of Santa Marinella (near Rome), marked the fulfillment of the professional development of Luigi Moretti (1907-1973). This book covers in detail the design history of this architectural masterpiece and offers an original interpretation based on the critical categories of the “Mediterranean”, the Baroque and the Informal, which fuelled a lively cultural debate in the fifties. It brings out the dominant role of the building’s interior space, which creates both the form and structure and determines the surface variations and modulations of the play of light, distinctive transmutations of matter that constantly stir the viewer’s emotional responses.
With a preface by Bruno Reichlin.

This volume has grown out of the international conference "Cosa è architetto. Domenico Fontana tra Melide, Roma e Napoli (1543-1607)", held in Mendrisio in autumn 2007. It was an important opportunity to take stock of the state of knowledge about Domenico Fontana, famous above all for the design of obelisks, whose work opened the era of the predominance of Ticinese architects on the Roman scene.

The essays are by Antonio Becchi, Anna Bedon, Federico Bellini, Costanza Caraffa, Maurizia Cicconi, Giovanna Curcio, Sabina de Cavi, Giovanni Di Maio, Francesco Paolo Fiore, Margherita Fratarcangeli, Fulvio Lenzo, Paolo Mascilli Migliorini, Nicola Navone, Maria Raffaella Pessolano, Isabella Salvagni, Grete Stefani, Letizia Tedeschi, Christof Thoenes, Manuel Vaquero Pineiro, Sergio Villari.

The Ticinese architect Luigi Canonica was employed by Napoleon in the years running from the Cisalpine Republic to the Kingdom of Italy and was again active at the Restoration. This book combines a monographic approach, aimed at the reconstruction and critical study of all of Canonica’s works, with an organization by major topics, such as his contribution to the process of urban renewal in Milan (he was the author, among other projects, of Foro Bonaparte and the Arena and drafted the first ever master plan for the city), his achievements in the architecture of gardens, villas, theaters and municipal buildings (such as the Villa Reale and Palazzo Reale in Milan and the Villa Reale with its park in Monza), and his role in the organization of offices for the control of architectural projects.

Reflecting this organization, the book presents essays by scholars and historians together with some 200 analytical entries devoted to specific works written by other specialists.

Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981), architect, urban planner and designer, is highly representative of the different phases of the 20th century in Italy. This handy format photographic book presents the interiors of five apartments in Milan. These are projects on which the architect impressed his personal hallmark, with the focus on aspects a that characterized his entire oeuvre: a concern for the relation between interiors and exteriors, the fluidity of space, the flexibility of internal divisions, accurate detailing, technological innovations and a careful choice of materials.

Like many of their fellow countrymen, the architects Visconti, Ruggia and Staffieri pursued fame and fortune in the Russia of the tsars, following the trail blazed at the dawn of the eighteenth century by Domenico Trezzini, the celebrated protagonist of the foundation of Saint Petersburg. Their vicissitudes appear between the lines of the letters sent to family, relatives and friends, brought together, fully annotated, in this volume to give a clear picture of the interweaving of family and professional relations in the context of Russian architecture and society.

It is true that the eighteenth century marks the entry of Russia into “European time” or, as Vittorio Strada writes in this book, «into the rhythm of a modernity that had found its origins in western Europe». But it is in the arts and, above all, in architecture, that the process is most remarkably evident. For between 1762, when Catherine II ascended the throne, and the death of her grandson Tsar Alexander I in 1825, the neoclassical style fully established itself and witnessed, in Russian architecture, an absolutely original interpretation. To that singular achievement Italian architectural culture made a major and multifarious contribution, which the present collection of essays seeks to explore.

The founding father of contemporary architecture in Ticino, Rino Tami (1908-1994) designed, when still very young, the Lugano Canton Library (1936-1940), the first excellent example of a modern public building in Ticino. In the Forties, organic architecture became a part of his wide cultural heritage. His professional maturity, attained in the Fifties and Sixties with public buildings (headquarters of the Italian Swiss Radio in Lugano) and private houses (Torre House in Lugano, Nadig House in Maroggia), coincided with his teaching commitment at the Zürich Polytechnic. From the Sixties he also held the post of supervisor of the architectural features along the Ticinese stretch of the Swiss motorway: tunnel entrances, bridges, portals, viaducts, embankment walls, service area buildings, public conveniences, storehouses, air shafts.

The book features the illustrated catalogue raisonné of the collection, held in the Ticino, of drawings by the Gilardi architects.

The Gilardis were architects of Ticinese stock who worked in Russia during the first half of the nineteenth century. In particular, Domenico (1785-1845) made a number of masterly contributions to the reconstruction of Moscow after the fire of 1812.

The catalogue opens with two essays: by Piervaleriano Angelini on neoclassical architecture in Moscow and St Petersburg, and by Alessandra Pfister on the human background and critical fortunes of the Gilardis.

This album of drawings was originally a gift presented in 1795 by the architect Luigi Rusca to the nobleman Zampiero Grimani, Venetian Ambassador to the court of Catherine II. The precious book, presented here in a facsimile edition with an in-depth historical and critical apparatus, contains twenty plates. Mostly in Indian ink and water-colour, they depict some of the principal monuments and residences of St Petersburg: works by Rusca himself and by others such as the illustrious Jean-Baptiste Michel Vallin de la Mothe and Giacomo Quarenghi.

The most complete and exhaustively examined study of the work of Panos Koulermos (1933-1999).

A roving architect, Koulermos was of Greek Cypriot birth, British by upbringing but “Mediterranean rationalist” by vocation. He built in Britain and in Italy, in Greece, Cyprus and in the United States, and taught at the principal universities.

He was also among the founders of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture.

This work is a complete catalogue of the drawings by Giacomo Quarenghi (1744-1817) kept at the state Museum of History of St Petersburg. It offers a remarkable record of the quality and scale of the work done by the Bergamo-born architect at the court of the tsars.

An English version of the catalogue texts is provided at the end of the book.
