“The New over the Old was the title of the course I have held at the Academy in recent years, with the term ‘over’ indicating not so much the desire to conceal as conscious integration. In the relation between these two words lies the transition to the project, which we can identify as an attempt to represent the new distance between things. After sharing a path through my works, because the project is taught through projects, and I would not know how to do otherwise, but also with the precise support of a survey of the data accumulated in places, the final critical work of each student began, applied each year to a different Italian city. With the help of the five points (place, time, land, light, silence) identified as an interpretational sequence and trace to modify space, and abetted by the quiet of the studio sessions, we translated sensations into measurements, in keeping with a method aimed not at offering free or abstractly creative solutions, in the belief that architecture is transformed and cannot be improvised” (Paolo Zermani).

Gottfried Semper’s years of exile in London (1850-55) were a time of highly inspiring experiences. The London of the Great Exhibition offered the German architect an immense trove of objects for study and an intellectual environment that provided seminal impulses for his innovative cultural-historical theory of architecture. The present volume, resulting from a collaborative SNSF research project of the Institute for the History and Theory of Art and Architecture, Università della Svizzera italiana, and the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture, ETH Zurich, positions Semper as both an observer and actor in this period. It goes beyond focusing on Semper as an individual person and considers his work as a designer, teacher, and writer of architecture against the backdrop of the historical, architectural, and disciplinary surroundings. This book presents an outline of the foundation and growth of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, established in 1996 as a faculty of the coeval Università della Svizzera italiana. The school was immediately distinguished by an educational range that sought to create a dialogue between different disciplines, only seemingly remote from architecture, with historians, philosophers, artists and scientists engaging with the work of architects and urban planners. And in retracing the first 25 years of the Academy, the author, a world-famous architect and one of the founders of the school, also recounts architecture experienced as a generational commitment in the face of environmental changes.

“This evening, to avoid boring you with familiar matters, I will talk about Borromini as a bridge builder, though physically he never built any. To understand the sense in which the word ‘bridge’ is to be understood, I will give the definition that a philosopher gave, which I will have occasion to speak of again. ‘The bridge rises light and powerful above the river. It not only connects two banks that already exist. The connection established by the bridge firstly causes the two banks to appear as banks. It is the bridge that properly opposes one to the other. The one bank is detached from and opposed to the other by virtue of the bridge. The banks then do not simply bound the river as the nondescript edges of dry land. With the two banks, the bridge each time brings one and the other expanse of the surrounding landscape. It brings the river, the banks and the surrounding land into reciprocal closeness’. The banks that Borromini’s bridges distinguish and connect are many. This first “Quaderno” from the BSc course in “Construction Systems and Processes” is devoted to a building by Rino Tami from the fifties, the Avegno Depot of the Maggia S.A. Hydroelectric Workshops. The second year students at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, guided by professor Franz Graf, carried out practical work on the Depot articulated in the collection and analysis of original documentation, the redrafting of the building plans and the production of axonometric projections and constructional models made to scale. A selection of the material collected for the course, with the original drawings and period photographs, together with a historical reading of the building, a structural analysis and a selection of students’ works make up this issue, which is intended not only to demonstrate the presence in Ticino of a notable architectural work, but also to furnish the operators responsible for its conservation with pointers about appropriate ways of carrying out maintenance or restoration work.

The founding father of contemporary architecture in Ticino, Rino Tami (1908-1994) designed, when still very young, the Lugano Canton Library (1936-1940), the first excellent example of a modern public building in Ticino. In the Forties, organic architecture became a part of his wide cultural heritage. His professional maturity, attained in the Fifties and Sixties with public buildings (headquarters of the Italian Swiss Radio in Lugano) and private houses (Torre House in Lugano, Nadig House in Maroggia), coincided with his teaching commitment at the Zürich Polytechnic. From the Sixties he also held the post of supervisor of the architectural features along the Ticinese stretch of the Swiss motorway: tunnel entrances, bridges, portals, viaducts, embankment walls, service area buildings, public conveniences, storehouses, air shafts.

Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981) graduated in architecture in 1931, when he was just 21 years old, after experiences that included working as an illustrator and fashion designer during his university studies. At the Politecnico di Milano he completed a training with a traditionalist matrix, but at the same time observed with interest the work of Le Corbusier and Gropius, showing himself a firm supporter of modernity. His long professional career spanned two successful seasons, the thirties and the period of reconstruction, and was characterized by an unusual versatility of interests: he was represented at all the editions of the Milan Triennial 1930-1957, an assistant at the School of Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano 1930-1949 and active in the architectural debate in Milan. Minoletti’s work covered the whole scale, ranging from the design of the city to that of the object, with an ease that was the sign of a “wholly Italian versatility”, as Gio Ponti observed. Giulio Minoletti’s professional archive, of which this volume presents the analytical inventory, is preserved in the Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio.

Yellowred is a publication that concerns architecture projects, built on preexisting architecture, converting, reusing, extending, downsizing or refurbishing it. Its main goal is to illustrate how buildings, in their inevitable transformation process, can be re-used. This publication will collect a number of projects that show a capacity to rediscover in the existing building hidden potentialities, transforming them in opportunities for the re-used building. It wants to talk about the strategies, themes, ideas and advantages of extending the lifespan of an existing structure, which has become a widely diffused practice due to today’s global commitment for what concerns sustainability. On the other hands Yellowred will look at examples from the past, showing that reusing existing buildings has always been part of architects’ concerns, for economic, social or cultural reasons.

Compelled to leave Bucharest in 1948, Ionel Schein (1927-2004) found political asylum in Paris, where his biography is entwined with that of some leading figures on the architectural scene of the time, such as Georges-Henri Pingusson, Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé and Bruno Zevi, with whom he developed enduring relationships ranging from intellectual affiliation to professional collaboration. His projects are notable for a unified design embodying light prefabricated elements and a distribution system capable of evolving over time together with the needs of the inhabitants. This program would include futuristic prototypes, such as the first plastic house, a lightweight knockdown single-family residence, built entirely using synthetic materials in pop colours. This volume offers a reading of Schein’s work drawing directly on the architect’s archive, to date almost entirely unexplored. Preface by Carlo Olmo. Afterword by Claude Parent.

This album of drawings was originally a gift presented in 1795 by the architect Luigi Rusca to the nobleman Zampiero Grimani, Venetian Ambassador to the court of Catherine II. The precious book, presented here in a facsimile edition with an in-depth historical and critical apparatus, contains twenty plates. Mostly in Indian ink and water-colour, they depict some of the principal monuments and residences of St Petersburg: works by Rusca himself and by others such as the illustrious Jean-Baptiste Michel Vallin de la Mothe and Giacomo Quarenghi.

Augusto Guidini (1853-1928) is numbered among the pioneers of Swiss art history and conservation, as well as one of the most learned architects of his age, together with Gottfried Semper, Karl Moser and Hans Bernoulli. «L’architecture est le jeu savant, correct et magnifique des volumes assemblés sous la lumière». Alluding to Le Corbusier’s famous statement of 1923, this collection of essays solicits critical reflection on the relationship between light and architecture, on both theoretical and practical levels. Beginning with a discussion of the problem of how to represent light and its effects within architectural space in different media (drawing, photography, film), it then examines the relationship between planning and hygiene-theories, focusing in particular on those which exercised their influence on the choice of orientation and exposure of buildings to the sun.
