The panorama of Mexican architecture at the beginning of this century is a variegated one, revealing the widest conceptual, stylistic and formal expressions and a happy mixture of the austere language of the Modern Movement, the lively idiom of the vernacular, and the legacy of Luis Barragán. This book illustrates the vibrant urban context of Mexico City in a selection of works by ten architects: the imposing embassy by Teodoro González de León, the metaphysical towers of Ricardo Legorreta, the buildings of Augustín Landa and Augusto Quijano, and the most recent accomplishments which are also so richly diverse in their aesthetic conception of Enrique Norten, Bernardo Gomez-Pimienta, Alberto Kalach, Javier Sánchez, Mauricio Rocha and Fernando Romero.Texts in English by Josep Acebillo, Néstor García Canclini, José Luis Cortés Delgado, Miquel Adriá.

«I’m gazing at photos of construction work. It is a fund acquired by the Academy of Mendrisio, representing the construction of Linea 1 of the Milan subway. Photographs with no artistic purpose, a pure record of the facts. No literature, no flights of fancy or female distractions, pure factual concreteness. Photos by engineers. Yet so beautiful, so full of stories.»Gianni Biondillo

The Clarté building in Geneva, conceived by Le Corbusier from 1930, is, curiously, one of the most important and least famous of the French-Swiss master’s works. For many reasons, which this catalogue expounds, it should in fact be considered one of the most interesting projects of the first half of the 20th century.

The book shows the big steps that Chinese urbanism is taking today. Beijing and Shanghai represent modern developments: one is the political and cultural center of the nation, while the other is its economic hub. Nanjing is taken as a typical case of Chinese urbanism, with its long history, natural geography, political events, and economic development. Texts in English by Josep Acebillo, Wowo Ding, Chen Zhao, Hongyan Xiao.

This volume brings together the works of Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013) devoted to the theme of landscape, bringing out the project that informed his gaze: the photographer was an architect by training, and particularly concerned with issues related to urban planning, as well as the development and transformation of the natural environment. The collection opens with a selection of photographs from the cycle Bord de Mer, the work Basilico carried out in the mid-eighties and which introduced him to the international arena: a research project which revealed, among much else, a close relation with art history, in particular with the painters of the eighteenth century. A broad selection is then given from two groups of works done in Switzerland: one dedicated to Luigi Snozzi’s architectural interventions at Monte Carasso (Locarno), the other to the landscape of the Saint-Gotthard Pass, interpreted as a lifeline between northern and southern Europe. Texts by Angela Madesani, Giovanna Calvenzi, João Nunes, Luigi Snozzi.
