The Atlas is the first issue of the PNR 65 research publication plan on “Public Space in the ‘Città Ticino’ of Tomorrow”. It includes the final output for the first of the four territorial units. The research established four territorial units: 1. River Ticino North; 2. River Ticino South; 3. Ceresio Basin; 4. Insubria triangle. The same methodology for analysis and design process is applied to each territorial unit. Each volume collects a series of critical contributions in the form of essays, a complete set of territorial and urbanistic analysis maps, design projects drawings (territorial and urbanistic scale: 1:25’000, 1:5’000), a selection of design studios from the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture on topics identified by the research.

Texts by Franz Oswald, Flora Ruchat-Roncati, Renato Svaluto-Ferro and Renato Gaggini, Stefano Zerbi, Michele Arnaboldi.

Antonini, Broggini, Brunoni, Ferrini, Fischer, Jäggli, Marazzi, Roelly, Tami. Arsenale militare Biasca, 1940-1942, Mendrisio Academy Press

This seventh issue of the series “Quaderni” from the BSc course in “Construction Systems and Processes” is devoted to the Arsenale militare Biasca (1940-1942), a complex designed by  the architects Giuseppe Antonini, Giannetto Broggini, Bruno Brunoni, Giuseppe Ferrini, Ferdinando Fischer, Augusto Jäggli, Americo and Attilio Marazzi, Oswald Roelly, Carlo and Rino Tami. The second year students at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, guided by professor Franz Graf, carried out practical work on the Arsenale articulated in the collection and analysis of original documentation, the redrafting of the buildings plans and the production of axonometric projections and constructional models made to scale. A selection of the material collected for the course, with the original drawings and period photographs, together with a historical reading of the buildings, a structural analysis and a selection of students’ works make up this issue, which is intended not only to demonstrate the presence in Ticino of a notable architectural work, but also to furnish the operators responsible for its conservation with pointers about appropriate ways of carrying out maintenance or restoration work.

«Design cannot be taught as objective knowledge with a clearly defined content, and this is one reason why instruction in this field cannot be integrated into orthodox university models. Teaching design means asking students to experience the project from within, to follow a path of non-linear, analogous, associative, and open-ended thinking combining intuition with the application of objective knowledge. Above all, it calls for a coherent theoretical and formal narrative that is not determined a priori, but rather while the project itself is being worked out. Students must directly experience how anything, or almost anything, can be transformed into an architectural idea. This is likely a new approach for them as it breaks with the positivist instruction and scientific fundamentals on which most of the educational systems they experience before entering a school of architecture are based. My teaching is not unilateral: it is itself, in an analogical way, hesitant, wavering, coming together bit by bit as it goes along» (Éric Lapierre).

Architecture and Knowledge, as the volume’s title effectively anticipates, presents numerous essays exploring the multiple forms of knowledge involved in architectural art. The contributions speak of the relations between architecture and technology, political thought, planning, philosophy, history, hermeneutics, anthropology, psychology and aesthetics. This, however, does not take the form of an encroachment on other disciplinary fields, but confirms the “holistic” structure of architecture, an art that in its exercise must inevitably draw on a broad range of cultural and scientific instruments.
Architecture as an open art, enriched by the dialogue with multiple forms of knowledge, is, moreover, the most precious legacy we receive from the great architectural works of history, from both the remote past and modernity.

The book presents a series of installations, conceived and built by Riccardo Blumer’s students at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture. They are a further stage in a distinctive educational process where the fundamental principles of architecture are learned in particular by reflecting on the role of the human body: emphasising its poietic role (the body that builds objects), its scenic potential (the body as a spatial device in motion) and its function as a unit of measurement of the world. The students then identified two areas of investigation to be combined. On the one hand a simple, archetypical architectural theme (door, wall, path, etc.); and on the other, a reflection that investigates physical phenomena and their relation with the body, using electronics, programming, bricolage, etc. The result is a set of installations, which the observer’s body can interact with, and which gives rise to a meditation on the primary themes of architecture.

This collection of studies investigates the works and cultural context of Giovanni Battista Mola and his son Pier Francesco, who hailed from Coldrerio (Canton Ticino, Switzerland) but were mainly active in Rome and the Papal States. Both were inquiring and many-sided, like their art. The former expressed his talent through architecture and historiographic writings; the latter, after an early training with his father, turned to painting, drawing and caricature, playing an important part on the Roman scene, where he was imitated by his pupils and colleagues as the highly appreciated inventor of new iconographic themes inspired by the ancient world.

Preface by Christoph Frank.

How was work done, how did income accumulate, and how was business conducted in pre-industrial societies? Through the experiences described in this book, the reader will discover a series of features distinguishing the various forms of work. Some are well-known, others perhaps less so, but all fall into three spheres: diversification of sources of income, creation of networks of contacts (professional and familial, political and religious), and adoption of complex business strategies.

«One moment is not like another. To wait for the right moment. Or to see the right moment. First this one. Patience. And then the next. Ready to see it. This moment, that is what it is about. This moment, which could be a definition. One of the definitions. Of architecture. On architecture. The moment when things that are seemingly unrelated suddenly and immediately seem to really relate to each other» (Jan De Vylder).

The volume explores the work of Giulio Minoletti (1910-1981), Milanese architect, urbanist and designer, in relation to the various themes embodied in his works. Starting from his scientific and intellectual biography and creative beginnings, already notable for a propensity to absorb  procedures, figures, types of pictorial and graphic composition from other disciplines, particularly the arts, the volume reconstructs Minoletti's position in the post-war debate on urban planning and his commitment to the modernisation of railway stations in Milan; his talent for working in delicate contexts, especially the historic fabric of the city of Milan, where he displayed spatial sensitivity and mastery in calibrating respect for the past with the search for modern solutions (as in the Condominium of superimposed villas at the Giardini d’Arcadia); his skill as a creator of spaces of life and display and “architecture in movement” (including the interior of the famous ETR 300-Settebello electric train and BZ 308 aircraft). These themes are all given a visual compendium in over 900 black-and-white and colour illustrations.

"Yellowred" is a publication that concerns architecture projects, built on preexisting architecture, converting, reusing, extending, downsizing or refurbishing it. Its main goal is to illustrate how buildings, in their inevitable transformation process, can be re-used. This publication will collect a number of projects that show a capacity to rediscover in the existing building hidden potentialities, transforming them in opportunities for the re-used building. It wants to talk about the strategies, themes, ideas and advantages of extending the lifespan of an existing structure, which has become a widely diffused practice due to today’s global commitment for what concerns sustainability. On the other hands "Yellowred" will look at examples from the past, showing that reusing existing buildings has always been part of architects’ concerns, for economic, social or cultural reasons.

Tomaso Adamini (1764-1827) and his sons Leone (1789-1854) and Domenico (1792-1860) were among the leading Ticinese architects and builders active in St. Petersburg, by the importance of their works and the duration of their activity, which extended from the last years of the reign of Catherine II until the mid-nineteenth century.

This book presents an annotated and illustrated catalogue of the holdings of their drawings in the Archivio del Moderno in Mendrisio: a fund comprising the drawings made by family members together with autograph sheets attributable to their employees or notable architects of the time: Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700-1771), Giacomo Quarenghi (1744-1817), Jean-François Thomas de Thomon (1759-1813), Carlo Rossi (1775-1849), Giovanni Battista Scotti (1776/77-1830), Alexander Brjullov (1798-1877), André Stackenschneider (1802-1865).

The catalogue is preceded by an extensive essay by Nicola Navone that frames the work of the Adamini architects in the setting of Russia and St. Petersburg, and within the context of the migrations of craft workers characteristic of the Ticinese area.

This fifth issue of the series “Quaderni” from the BSc course in “Construction Systems and Processes” is devoted to the Centrale Idroelettrica Nuova Biaschina, built in Personico by Augusto Jäggli with Giovanni Lombardi and Giuseppe Gellera (1962-1967). The second year students at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, guided by professor Franz Graf, carried out practical work on the project articulated in the collection and analysis of original documentation, the redrafting of the building plans and the production of axonometric projections and constructional models made to scale. A selection of the material collected for the course, with the original drawings and period photographs, together with a historical reading of the building, a structural analysis and a selection of students’ works make up this issue, which is intended not only to demonstrate the presence in Ticino of a notable architectural work, but also to furnish the operators responsible for its conservation with pointers about appropriate ways of carrying out maintenance or restoration work.

The third volume of the “Quaderni” presents the reflections of the architect-professors who compose the Faculty Board of the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture-Università della Svizzera italiana. It is not, however, the customary exposition of their vision of the discipline and professional practice. The contributions embody such themes in varying degrees, but above all they present the cultural frame of reference that each architect believes to be the most significant in explaining his or her personality. The term “atlas” in the title should therefore be understood as the set of formative lessons, technological and historical curiosities, aesthetic explorations and intellectual orientations that form the expressive canon of each architect.

Contributions by: Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus, Walter Angonese, Michele Arnaboldi, Valentin Bearth, Riccardo Blumer, Martin Boesch, Mario Botta, Riccardo Blumer, Marianne Burkhalter & Christian Sumi, Antonio Citterio, Marc Collomb, Grafton Architects, Diébédo Francis Kéré, Quintus Miller, João Nunes, Valerio Olgiati, and Jonathan Sergison.
